Artemis and Arrival Education
We set up Artemis in 1997 with a vision to create a performance lead business, driven by a strong cultural identity. For us, that culture meant a commitment from our business and staff to get involved with other organisations where we could make a difference beyond the investment world. Not purely from a charitable point of view, but also from a personal development perspective.
From a very early stage, we teamed up with Arrival Education. Arrival demonstrated the importance of getting in at the school level, to provide support to students from some of the most ethnically and socially diverse, as well as challenging schools in London. These students typically have more issues to navigate than most but also lacked access to the career support needed to get ahead. Arrival focused on recruiting bright, influential young people by offering support through developing the key mindsets and career skills by leveraging their business connections and partnerships.
Here are some telling statistics from the selected student cohort 2018–19:
- Before starting the programme 90% of students who worked with Artemis did not know a single person in ‘corporate UK’ they could turn to for help or advice.
- 85% of students who worked with Artemis are from families with an income of £20,000 or less per annum
It was a vision Arrival had for the long-term development of its students that attracted us to their work. We saw an opportunity not only to support the organisation financially but also to engage through direct contact with the mentoring programme. The Artemis Coaching programme offers the opportunity for our staff to engage with young adults to develop various life skills through shared experiences. It offers students a glimpse into a world they rarely, if ever, get to see.
To date, we have had nearly an incredible 25% of all Artemis staff involved in one or other of Arrival programmes. The feedback from our people has been incredibly positive, with the learning process being very much a 2-way street.
- 100% of our people enjoyed the programme and would recommend it to others, and
- 80% of our people improved their coaching skills and felt developed as a result of the programme
The relationship with Arrival has now developed further, with engagement moving beyond the initial workshop programmes. Artemis is for the second year running the Artemis Profit Hunt programme, where students from local London schools form teams with Artemis staff to take part in an investment competition.
The teams select stocks and create portfolios and compete over a 6-month period in order to generate the best returns. The process introduces the students to the investment world, as well as developing their team building, communication and presentational skills. During the competition, the teams get to discuss investment ideas, present to their peers and mentors and also get a chance to question a Chief Executive of one of the UK’s largest companies. The winning team gets to spend some time at Artemis to develop their skills further. For this year’s Profit Hunt we have nearly 70 students taking part and nearly 20% of Artemis employees are involved from a variety of business functions. It really brings the whole organisation together in a very positive way, where we feel we can contribute to smart young minds, who may at some point want to work in the financial services sector.
Student reflections and statistics from the 2018–19 Partnership:
”Thank you for being so easy to talk to, you made the coaching sessions something to look forward to every month. So thank you for being by far the best coach ever!”
- 100% of student participants found it useful
- 100% of student participants increased in confidence
- 100% of student participants have an improved understanding of their strengths and development areas
“The week was incredibly valuable in helping to confirm my desire to go into fund management and the departments I may wish to work in.”
The final part of our interaction is the introduction of Arrival to some of the businesses we have relationships with. Arrival has spent the last 13+ years building a database of ethnically diverse, talented students who have been equipped with the skills to develop in life. They offer the opportunity for businesses to tap into this unique offering and employers the opportunity to target this broad-based talent.
We look forward to another 10 years of relationship with Arrival Education.
